China’s Antimonopoly Bureau Director General Wu Zhenguo interviewed by the Antitrust Source

Recently the Antitrust Source, edited and published by the American Bar Association, has interviewed Wu Zhenguo, the Director General of the Antimonopoly Bureau, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

Mr. Wu Zhenguo gave his interview in writing. In the 22-page draft, the Director General introduces the present state of the antitrust law enforcement in China, the upcoming revision of the Antimonopoly Law, fair competition review process etc, and also shares China’s explorations and practical experience in the antitrust regulation of digital economy. The head of China’s newly unified competition agency, discusses the relationship between SAMR’s national office and provincial and local authorities, legislative developments, mergers, administrative monopolies, etc. In his view, the main highlight of the last year’s enforcement is the breakthrough in the antitrust enforcement in platform economy. Mr. Wu notes that Alibaba’s “either-or choice” case is the first and significant anticompetitive case in the Internet economy, which is considered as an important milestone in the prevention of platform monopoly and protection of competition.
