Challenges and Opportunities for South Africa in the New Geopolitical Reality

On April 10, Tembinkosi Bonakele, Professor of the Wits University, Former Commissioner of the South African Competition Commission, delivered an honorary report on “Challenges and Opportunities for South Africa in the New Geopolitical Reality” at the XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development at the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The visit of the Former Commissioner of the South African Competition Commission is organized by the BRICS International Competition Law and Policy Centre. The meeting was moderated by Alexey Ivanov, Director of the BRICS Centre. 

Tembinkosi Bonakele headed the South African Competition Commission from 2013 to 2022. He established the Commission’s cartels division and has worked on all of the Commission’s major cases over the past ten years, including Telkom and SAB abuse of dominance cases and a number of high-profile mergers. Under his leadership, the Commission conducted important investigations into information and communications technology and Online Intermediation Platforms Market Inquiry. Mr. Bonakele co-edited a book titled “Competition Law for the New Era.” He is a recipient of the Black Management Forums’s Black Excellency Award and is a regular speaker at international competition policy conferences.
