BRICS Working Group for the Research of Competition Issues in Digital Markets

On April 23, the BRICS Working Group for the Research of Competition Issues in Digital Markets will meet at the Higher School of Economics. The key topic for discussion will be the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for competition in the BRICS economies. The event will be held as part of the International Conference - Extended Meeting of the Board of the FAS of Russia (hereinafter - the Conference), timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of antimonopoly regulation in Russia in 2025.

The BRICS Working Group for the Research of Competition Issues in Digital Markets is co-chaired by the FAS of Russia and the Brazilian Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE).

During the Working Group meeting, representatives of BRICS+ antitrust authorities, experts, researchers and legal practitioners will discuss the concentrated digital ecosystems and new market structures due to the AI integration, regulatory frameworks for AI governance in diverse socio-economic landscapes of BRICS nations, as well as the challenges faced by antitrust authorities in the context of technological change.

Special attention will be paid to cross-border data governance issues and possible risks of monopolisation through AI by Big Tech firms and its implications for digital sovereignty in BRICS markets.

The Conference program also includes a plenary session - an Extended Meeting of the Board of the FAS of Russia, a meeting of heads of antimonopoly authorities of the SCO member states, the 58th meeting of the Interstate Council on Antimonopoly Policy, and a meeting of the Headquarters for Joint Investigations of Violations of the Antimonopoly Law of the CIS member states.
