Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) competes in four categories of the GCR Awards 2022, an award promoted annually by the British magazine Global Competition Review (GCR), specializing in the defence and regulation of competition. Voting is open until February 14.

Once again, CADE was nominated in the "Government agency of the year" category for its effective, strategic and innovative performance in 2021. The agency's performance in combating anti-competitive conduct, mainly cartels, is one of the year's highlights, with the opening investigations and sentencing of relevant cases.

Regarding preventive action, GCR highlighted CADE's disapproval of two mergers that had already been authorized, but whose remedies determined in an agreement entered into with the companies involved in the operations were not complied with: the acquisition of Innova Videolar and the purchase of Plamed by Hapvida. CADE competes in this category with the antitrust authorities of the European Commission, France, Germany and Portugal.

The administrative process initiated by CADE's General Superintendence to investigate violations of the economic order in the labour market related to the industry of products, equipment and related services for health care (healthcare) is a finalist in the categories "Enforcement action of the year" and "Behavioral matter of the year – Americas". The investigation was motivated by evidence of information sharing between competitors regarding remuneration, salary adjustments and benefits offered to employees and/or future employees of this industry.

Finally, CADE competes in the "Merger control matter of the year – Americas" category for its performance in the analysis of two acts of economic concentration. The first is related to the acquisition of Companhia de Locação das Américas (Unidas) by Localiza Rent a Car, with the application of remedies aimed at reducing risks to the competitive environment. The second refers to the purchase of Grupo Oi's mobile telephony assets by operators Tim, Claro and Telefônica Brasil (owner of the Vivo brand).

Voting for the "GCR Awards 2022" is open to the public and can be carried out on the GCR website until February 14, 2022. Winners will be announced on April 5, during a ceremony promoted by GCR in Washington, USA.
