Cooperation aims to prevent and repress violations in waterway transportation sector.

The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) signed a technical cooperation agreement with the Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ) to enhance cooperation to prevent and repress antitrust violations. The agreement covers mainly the anticompetitive practices in the Brazilian waterway transportation sector.

According to the document, the cooperation aims to exchange information and issue studies to improve the efficiency of both agencies. The cooperation agreement also includes the monitoring and supervision of economic activities in the sector, reinforcing the commitment to free competition and transparency in the market.

Mr Alexandre Cordeiro, president of CADE, stated that the cooperation between the institutions is essential to create more efficient competition defence initiatives. “The agreement with ANTAQ improves our performance and strengthens the mechanisms to supress anticompetitive practices, which is a benefit for society, since it creates a fairer and more balanced market”, he emphasised.

The agreement is valid for a five-year term and establishes that each institution will provide human and technological resources to implement the planned actions. There will be no financial transactions between the parties, which means that each of them is responsible for the costs of their own activities. In addition, there must be joint reports to evaluate the results achieved, they must also ensure confidentiality of the sensitive information collected during the cooperation.
