China has opened a cybersecurity review into Palo Alto Networks, escalating scrutiny of foreign tech firms amid national security concerns.
China launched a formal security review into products sold by US technology firm Palo Alto Networks Inc. within the Chinese market.
The Cybersecurity Review Office of the Cyberspace Administration announced the move in a statement Thursday. It cited national security laws and the need to protect critical information infrastructure as primary reasons for the probe, without elaborating further.
Palo Alto Networks last year said Chinese hackers breached email servers of foreign ministers as part of a years-long effort targeting the communications of diplomats around the world.
China subsequently instructed companies in the country not to use cybersecurity products from American and Israeli firms including Palo Alto Networks Inc., according to a government directive seen by Bloomberg News.
The company has multiple offices in China, including locations in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Guangzhou, according to its website.
