The counselor will lead the agency until the final appointment by the President of the Republic.
This Monday (July 14), Counselor Gustavo Augusto Freitas de Lima officially takes over as President of Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE). He steps into the role following the end of Alexandre Cordeiro's four-year term at the helm of the agency.
A member of CADE’s Tribunal since April 2022, Lima brings a strong academic background and extensive public service experience. He holds degrees in Law and Naval Sciences, a postgraduate degree in Public Law, and a Master’s degree in Law. He has also completed programs at Harvard Law School and the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV).
A federal attorney since 2006, the new CADE president previously served as Legal Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic for five years, during which he held the position of Deputy Chief for Economic Policy.
He also led the Litigation Department of the Federal Attorney General’s Office (PGF), overseeing the nationwide litigation strategy for federal agencies and foundations, with direct involvement in cases before the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and other high courts.
The permanent appointment of CADE’s presidency will follow current legal procedures, requiring a formal nomination by the President of the Republic and subsequent confirmation by the Federal Senate.
