Head of the FAS Met with the Executive Director of COMESA Competition Commission

Maxim Shaskolsky, Head of the FAS of Russia, met with Willard Mvemba, Chief Executive Officer of the Competition Commission of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

The parties discussed the specifics of antimonopoly regulation in the current environment and outlined priority areas of cooperation between regulators, as well as considered the issues of competition protection in socially important markets, including food, pharmaceuticals and energy. Regulation of these areas is a priority task of the two agencies. 

As Maxim Shaskolsky noted, the experience of the COMESA Competition Commission as a supranational body in Africa is important for FAS of Russia, in this regard, the service welcomes the intensification of cooperation.

“Willard Mwemba, in turn, noted that they value the experience of FAS of Russia in the adaptation of antimonopoly legislation to new economic conditions caused, in particular, by digitalization, as well as the fight against anti-competitive practices in food markets, which are also in the focus of attention of the Commission,” 

the FAS said in a press release.

Contacts with the COMESA Competition Commission were established in 2022. FAS of Russia and COMESA actively cooperate on the UNCTAD platform, in particular, within the framework of the Working Group on Cross-Border Cartels. FAS of Russia has met with the heads of competition authorities of a number of COMESA member countries on several occasions during major international events, including the Russia-Africa Forum in 2023 in St. Petersburg and the Conference of the African Competition Forum in 2023 in Gambia.
