India Moves to Regulate Online Gaming Market with New Authority

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 was first notified in the Gazette of India on August 22, 2025.

The Ministry of Information and Technology has formally notified the constitution of the Online Gaming Authority of India under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, with all the provisions of the Act coming into effect from May 1, 2026.

The Authority comprises senior officials from six ministries including Electronics and Information Technology, Home Affairs, Finance, Information and Broadcasting, Youth Affairs and Sports, Law and Justice, operating on an ex-officio basis.

The Central Government has empowered cyber cells across state and union territory police forces to investigate offences under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025.

Police officers heading cyber cells and nodal cyber officers at police station, district and commissionerate levels are now authorised to investigate offences under the said act.
