China’s market regulator conducted a specialized training program, attended by 72 provincial antitrust enforcement officers from across the country.

In a strategic move to address new forms of monopolistic behavior, China’s top competition regulator focused its recent training initiative on the platform economy and intellectual property, or IP.

Earlier this week, the State Administration for Market Regulation, or SAMR, said it conducted a specialized training program from March 24 to 29, attended by 72 provincial antitrust enforcement officers from across the country.

The training course provided an in-depth analysis of the manifestations of new types of monopolistic behaviors in areas such as the platform economy and IP, as well as new trends and developments in global antitrust enforcement.

With a focus on enhancing the skills of law enforcement personnel in case analysis, electronic evidence collection, and Big Data analysis, the program aimed to fortify the theoretical and practical aspects of regulatory enforcement against these novel monopolistic practices.

Although SAMR's disclosure did not provide details on the new types of monopolies, a recent statement by its local branch in Anhui Province may offer some insight.

In its 2025 antitrust agenda, the Anhui provincial regulator identified practices such as "best price guarantees" and "algorithmic collusion" as new forms of suspected antitrust violations, designating them as key targets for enforcement actions in the platform economy sector.

SAMR’s training sessions are expected to enhance case-handling capabilities, ensure a consistent enforcement approach and promote collaboration among enforcement agencies nationwide to effectively combat monopolistic practices.
