Alexandre Barreto, the general superintendent of Brazil’s competition authority CADE, is expected to be re-appointed to a second two-year term, Valor Econômico reported on 20 February, citing unnamed sources.

Barreto, who heads CADE’s General Superintendent’s Office (SG) and has already served as CADE’s president, oversees the first stage of merger reviews and conduct investigations, the Portuguese-language item said.

Barreto’s current term in office ends on 12 April, according to the report. If re-appointed by the federal government and approved by the Senate, he would serve an additional two years. If a candidate is not appointed and confirmed by then, a deputy general superintendent would take over.

The government’s reappointment of Barreto would amount to a sign of good will to Federal Audit Court (TCU) President Bruno Dantas, one of Barreto’s main political godfathers, the item stated.

Late last year, Barreto was scouted by Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho to take over the ministry’s executive secretariat, the item said. The government mapped out potential candidates to replace Barreto at CADE given his potential departure. But since the minister chose another candidate for the executive secretariat position, Barreto has prioritized his re-appointment as general superintendent, the item said.
