UPI Autopay helps customers make recurring payments using any UPI application that supports the feature.
Amid the ongoing controversy around Google’s Play Store billing policy, the tech giant has introduced UPI Autopay as a payment option for subscription-based purchases on Google Play in India.
The move comes days after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a fine INR 936 Cr for abusing its dominant position with respect to its Play Store policies.
This should ensure some relief for users given recurring payments have been failing since RBI introduced its new norms where companies are no longer allowed to store card information without prior user consent.
The new option on Google Play will support apps such as Google Pay, Paytm and Amazon and others.
With the introduction of UPI Autopay on the platform, the company aims to extend the convenience of UPI to subscription-based purchases, as well as enable local developers to grow their subscription-based businesses on Google Play, Google’s representative added.
To activate UPI Autopay in India, subscribers select a subscription plan, tap on the payment method and select the 'Pay With UPI' option. Then, they have to approve the purchase of the selected product on their supported UPI app.
