The Competition Commission of India Has Released a Report on the Pharmaceutical Sector

The report is titled 'Market Study on the Pharmaceutical Sector in India: Key Findings and Observations'.

According to the CCI's press release -the study's main objective was to understand the factors that are involved in influencing the price competition and price formation in the pharmaceutical sector. The study, released and prepared y the CCI, has specifically focused on the specific areas of pharmaceutical distribution and the role of trade associations, trade margins, online pharmacies and the prevalence of branded generic drugs in India and its implications for competition. It has also considered the fact that the pharmaceutical sector is a regulated sector and thus has attempted to explore the areas of interface between regulation and competition with a view to ascertain the Commission'sadvocacy priorities.

Given the criticality and importance of the pharmaceutical market, this study is very important in terms of drug care for patients. This is another step towards ensuring that more people can access new effective drugs. As the press release on the CCI's website states - "It is expected that the insights gained from the market study will inform and contribute significantly to the design of the pharma market in India to help attain the objective of affordable medicines for all".
