Weekly Newsletter on Chinese antitrust 01.08-07.08.2021

In a new weekly review, experts from the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre cover the main events of the Chinese antitrust. The Ministry of Propaganda of the People's Republic of China has published Guidelines for Strengthening the Evaluation of Culture and Art in the New Era. It is assumed that the document will limit the role of algorithms in the distribution of media content and restrain the growth of companies such as Tencent. Moreover, Tencent shares fell by more than 10% after the pro-government publication Economic Information Daily called the game industry a “digital drug” that traumatizes Chinese teens. On July 28, the seminar on compliance of digital entities with the Data Security Law was held, where representatives of companies presented their understanding of the law. An important event of the first week of August was the resuming of the functions of the WeChat application, which temporarily stopped registering new accounts on July 27. At the same time, Alibaba became a co-developer of the Olympic Games cloud platform. In early August, the countdown started: there are 100 days left until the 7th International Competition Conference under the auspices of the BRICS, which will be held in the Chinese province of Sichuan.
