2023 Antitrust Global Seminar Series was organized in partnership with the Antitrust Division of the American Bar Association (ABA).

The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), in partnership with the American Bar Association (ABA) Antitrust Law Section, hosted the 2023 Antitrust Global Seminar Series on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Experts in antitrust gathered at the plenary session of the agency to debate current issues about the technology sector in Brazil and Latin America.

The Global Seminar Series program, which brought together government officials and private bar experts, featured three segments of general interest to all competition, consumer protection and privacy practitioners, on leading-edge issues. Each session also had interactive discussions.

The opening of the event, which was part of CADE's Exchange Program, PinCade, was conducted by the president of the Brazilian antitrust authority, Alexandre Cordeiro, and the director of ABA's antitrust division, Hartmut Schneider.

In his speech, Cordeiro recalled the edition of the Antitrust Global Seminar Series held at CADE in 2018 and highlighted the importance of the interlocution between the autarchy and other institutions such as the ABA.

"CADE has a historical relationship with the ABA. And this interaction, not only of CADE, but also of the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association) with the ABA, raises the importance of Competition Law in Brazil and Latin America,"

Cordeiro evaluated.

Schneider also talked about the collaborative performance that CADE seeks to promote in the evaluation of cases and in the discussion of relevant themes for the country and the world.

"CADE has always given extreme importance to international cooperation in a very practical level in the analysis of its cases and, seeing this event, I realize that this tradition is maintained,"

 he said.

On the first panel, mediated by the head of CADE's International Advisory Office, Bruna Pamplona de Queiroz, the participants discussed the recent international cooperation and convergence efforts and the ABA's long-standing relationship with CADE. The debate featured Hartmut Schneider and Randall Tritell, former director of the International Office of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The second panel of the day was on competition, consumer protection, and privacy in technology markets. CADE's general superintendent, Alexandre Barreto, mediated the debate, which included presentations by CADE's chief prosecutor, Juliana Oliveira Domingues, the director of the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), Miriam Winner, and lawyers Eduardo Frade and Marcela Mattiuzzo.

The discussions of the third panel revolved around digital trends and merger controls. The debate was mediated by the vice-president of the Global Competition and Regulatory Policy, Computer & Communications Industry Association, Kristian Katona, with the participation of CADE's assistant superintendent, Diogo Thomson, and the lawyers Fabrício Almeida, Paola Pugliese and Cristianne Zarzur.

American Bar Association (ABA)

The ABA is the largest voluntary association of lawyers in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law. Currently, the association has more than 400,000 members.

The ABA's antitrust division is one of the world's leading communities of competition, consumer protection, and data privacy professionals. In 2022, CADE's president, Alexandre Cordeiro, was nominated to be an honorary member of the ABA's Antitrust Law Section, reinforcing CADE's prestige in the international antitrust community.
