Deputy Director of China's Cyber Administration Wang Jingtao stated that new technologies are creating additional cyber threats.

In the face of evolving cybersecurity threats driven by technological advancements, China will also harness new technologies such as artificial intelligence to bolster its defenses, a senior Chinese internet official said today.

Speaking at a forum in Wuhan, Wang Jingtao, deputy director of China’s Cyberspace Administration, noted that while conventional threats to critical infrastructure persist, breakthroughs in drones, autonomous driving, embodied intelligence, and satellite Internet have introduced new cybersecurity challenges.

To tackle the emerging risks, Wang stressed the need for technological innovation and the establishment of standards to guide emerging business models and related technologies.

Meanwhile, Wang said new technologies such as AI can empower cybersecurity protection efforts and boost overall cybersecurity defense capabilities.

He cited the example of deploying AI in cybersecurity testing, with over 20 models already in operation.

“This year, we will continue to innovate and further develop artificial intelligence and other technologies for their employment in the area of cybersecurity,”

said Wang.

Wang also underscored that safeguarding critical information infrastructure requires enhanced capacity.

Given China's extensive and widely distributed critical infrastructure, addressing various risks necessitates upgrading protection measures — from merely enhancing attack resistance to ensuring comprehensive, continuous security, according to Wang.

He added that the government intends to promote the interconnectivity and interoperability of cybersecurity products.

Historically, cybersecurity breaches were reported to affected parties and government regulators. However, there was a lack of coordinated response.

As part of efforts to address this issue, Wang said authorities will enhance the national cybersecurity certification service system. This system is primarily led by the market regulator, with the Internet, public security, industry and information technology regulators also participating.

Wang further stressed the need to cultivate cybersecurity talent for emerging sectors, including cloud services, and highlighted the importance of adopting large AI models alongside personalized training programs.
