The Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring) has added the U.S. company Meta Inc. (designated as an extremist organization and banned in Russia) to the list of organizations involved in terrorism and extremism.

On March 21 the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow recognized the American company Meta as an extremist organization and banned its activity on the territory of Russia. Instagram and Facebook (also owned by Meta) were blocked in Russia. The court decision does not prohibit the activity of messenger WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, as it does not carry out public distribution of information.

The reason for the suit of the General Prosecutor's Office to recognize Meta as an extremist organization was the corporation's plans to allow users to publish messages calling for violence against Russian citizens and, in particular, against the Russian military, against the background of the beginning of Russia's special operation in Ukraine. The changes in the rules of the Instagram community were reported by Reuters on March 10.

Later in the State Duma proposed to reconsider the blocking of Instagram. Thus, the leader of the party "New People" Alexey Nechaev said that this platform is important both for business and for communication. In addition, a member of the party, the head of the State Duma Committee on Small and Medium Entrepreneurship Alexander Demin promised to ask the Prosecutor General's Office to check the possibility of unblocking the social network.
